<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--tev39Oyfgg/VyZRnLv6LrI/AAAAAAAAGl4/ub1BCxtYDiUfawm8jr1onYsRtWi89KZrACLcB/s1600/Measurement%2BPic.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="364" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--tev39Oyfgg/VyZRnLv6LrI/AAAAAAAAGl4/ub1BCxtYDiUfawm8jr1onYsRtWi89KZrACLcB/s640/Measurement%2BPic.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
To introduce measurement in my 2nd grade classroom, I usually use the book, "How Big is a Foot?" by Rolf Myller. The kids always get a kick out of the story, so this year I decided to take my introduction one step further. We pretty much acted out the concept in the book, but before I read them the story.<br />
<br />
Materials Needed:<br />
Multiple sizes of shoes (Barbie shoe, baby shoe, toddler shoe, 2nd grader shoe, woman's shoe, and a large man's shoe)<br />
Butcher/Bulletin Board Paper<br />
Markers<br />
Pencils<br />
<br />
I put students into 6 groups (or however many shoes you have, I had 6 shoes). I told the students that I needed them to make me a bed today that was 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. They kind of looked at me funny, but I told them I just needed them to draw me a bed that was 6 feet by 3 feet. I tried not to give them too much information to start, but I told them that I'd give them a foot to use to help them measure out the bed.<br />
<br />
Once the students were all in their groups around the room with their butcher paper, pencils, and markers. I started walking around and handing out shoes to each group and telling them that was their "foot" that they needed to use to measure their bed with. Not every group paid attention to the other groups, but they were more interested in the shoe that I had given them. They all worked diligently on creating their 6 foot by 4 foot beds. Some needed assistance with measuring it 6 feet long and then 4 feet wide. Since it was all an introduction, they hadn't experienced much with measuring in the past. It was a good pre-assessment for me just to see if they knew how to line up nonstandard units and measure with them. It helped me know where we should get started.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8nUoR-BMhAM/VyZaGhnJzEI/AAAAAAAAGmI/o5C8-qM1uYULXxk14Jd0WvxzDrzmRIzDQCLcB/s1600/measurement%2Bpic%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8nUoR-BMhAM/VyZaGhnJzEI/AAAAAAAAGmI/o5C8-qM1uYULXxk14Jd0WvxzDrzmRIzDQCLcB/s640/measurement%2Bpic%2B1.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WtZIVXcKhpY/VyZaN4ZJnkI/AAAAAAAAGmQ/qrY_OhnKDd47dZ0EUlFhzeDFqhE16RGCgCLcB/s1600/measurement%2Bpic%2B2.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WtZIVXcKhpY/VyZaN4ZJnkI/AAAAAAAAGmQ/qrY_OhnKDd47dZ0EUlFhzeDFqhE16RGCgCLcB/s320/measurement%2Bpic%2B2.png" width="640" /></a></div>
After they finished drafting their beds with a pencil, they started going over them with markers and some of them added more decorations, They really enjoyed themselves. When everyone was done, I had each group stand up and share the "foot" that they used, then the finished bed. We talked about which bed was the biggest, the one that used the biggest "foot" and which was smallest, the one that used the smallest "foot."<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bYSJE39NIa0/VyZaMLMFiLI/AAAAAAAAGmM/9mxyOAOvc7AIHC6kNLDs43UFiA3sscPUgCLcB/s1600/measurement%2Bpic%2B3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bYSJE39NIa0/VyZaMLMFiLI/AAAAAAAAGmM/9mxyOAOvc7AIHC6kNLDs43UFiA3sscPUgCLcB/s640/measurement%2Bpic%2B3.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WthX32igVD8/VyZahGr6xlI/AAAAAAAAGmU/YxNwQYI-NRoGpNaFzqdGWKr7YxkRblTIwCLcB/s1600/measurement%2Bpic%2B4.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WthX32igVD8/VyZahGr6xlI/AAAAAAAAGmU/YxNwQYI-NRoGpNaFzqdGWKr7YxkRblTIwCLcB/s320/measurement%2Bpic%2B4.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Next, we read Rolf Myller's book, "How Big is a Foot?", which has a king asking to have a bed (which hadn't been invented yet) for the queen for her birthday. When asked how big to make it, he used his own foot to measure out 6 foot by 3 foot, but this became a problem when the person building the bed had much smaller feet than the king.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/How-Foot-Young-Yearling-Book/dp/0440404959/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462126724&sr=8-1&keywords=how+big+is+a+foot" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gMCDWPz1nmE/VyZNvQ8C1jI/AAAAAAAAGlk/p5b8FiWxH1EZVNIj7GR3aEwX33W5NPK7gCLcB/s1600/download.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
After the story, we talked about our own beds that we created and why we can't just use whatever "foot" we can find, but we should have a STANDARD unit of measurement. Then, I introduced the unit of measurement: one foot and showed the students that it was equal to 12 inches.<br />
<br />
The kids had a blast and I did, too!<br />
<br />

<br />
After emptying this Cascade container, I knew I had to use it for a center at school! As a teacher constantly trying to come up with new ideas to keep the kids engaged, I saw the container as an alligator right away. Later, I did look this up on Pinterest and I saw that many other teachers have the same mentality as I do, and they turned their containers into alligators, too!<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
See the pictures below to see how I transformed the container with some Duck Tape and construction paper. I've created three simple games to put inside the container and I'm working on some more. I'll change the games/skills out easily as I see fit for my classroom. I'm also going to keep one at home for my girls to practice letters and sight words!<br />

It's that time of the year where my students really need an extra boost to keep them engaged. It's also that time of year when I am starting to lose my energy on keeping them engaged! Anyone else know what I mean?<br />
<br />
I have seen a lot of people post about using plastic Easter eggs in the past for various activities, but never tried it. I ran into The Dollar Tree a few weeks ago for something else (literally RAN in, my husband and kids were waiting in the car!). I saw all of these adorable eggs that they had just set out on display and scooped them up without thinking. I was determined that I would find something cute to do with them! Cute patterns and adorable little yellow chicks. I also found eggs with three parts at our local grocery store Meijer (one of my very favorite stores out of Michigan and luckily we have them in Indiana, too!) Anyway, I was excited to find those three part ones too!<br />
<br />
We are working on mastering our addition and subtraction facts in second grade, so I made a big basket of eggs for them to match up the fact with the sum or difference. The top and bottom patterns don't match, I didn't want to make it TOO easy for them! :) </div>

I also made two different sets of eggs with the chicks. One set is synonyms and one set is antonyms. I laid all of the egg halves out on the table and told my small group the one that made the most "matches" was the winner. They loved it! </div>

Finally, here are the three part eggs that I made into Nonsense Word Fluency practice. Luckily, not many of my kids still need this, but the ones that do are LOVING it! I honestly think I'm going to keep these around and use them at the beginning of the year next year. They love turning the parts of the eggs and making new words. The eggs do come apart when they are doing it sometimes, but they are easy to pop back together. Such an easy away to engage frustrated readers!<br />

I've recently started creating these weekly vocabulary units! I will be creating 30+ weeks, for every week of the school year. Each week focuses on 6 vocabulary words and will include the same activities each week to help your students enrich their vocabulary. The activities won't change much, if at all, so your students can focus on the new WORDS, rather than on new activities/games to learn. Please see the following pictures and descriptions of all that is included! Week 1 is posted in my store and watch for more weeks in the very near future! As I go, I'll bundle 5 weeks at a time for a discounted price. (Weeks 1-5 will be bundled when I finish all five.) I'd love to hear what you think!</div>

There is an awesome group of teacher bloggers doing another book giveaway like we did at Christmas time! This time, it's all VALENTINE'S DAY and LOVE! What could be better?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PNAjDK5DOGw/VpQJigKxzSI/AAAAAAAADcw/bkuNidP5s8k/s1600/Slide01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PNAjDK5DOGw/VpQJigKxzSI/AAAAAAAADcw/bkuNidP5s8k/s640/Slide01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, we are calling this the SO IN LOVE WITH BOOKS Giveaway. Here's how it works, check out the book that I am sharing below. Download my freebie if you'd like it, collect the number at the bottom of my post (Don't enter the rafflecopter until you have all of the numbers!), then hop over to the next teacher blog that I have indicated at the bottom. Continue to go through all of the blogs and collect all of the numbers, add them up, and THAT is the number that you enter in drawing. You could win ALL 12 of the books that are shared in this giveaway! Plus you get 12 freebies no matter what! Let's get started!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Freebie-Valentines-Day-is-Cool-Pete-the-Cat-Companion-Mini-Pack-2299690" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="420" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B5XfgbTuqR4/VpQKDbUCoPI/AAAAAAAADdE/3LmC8vWYDKQ/s640/vday%2Bmy%2Bbook%2Bslide%2BSTUCKEY%2BIN%2BSECOND.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Second graders love Pete the Cat! There is just something WAY COOL about this cat that they all seem to love. Well the book starts out with Pete being "TOO COOL" for Valentine's Day, which his feline friend Callie then persuades him into realizing Valentine's Day IS cool. I think a lot of boys, especially at the 2nd grade up level, can relate to this. Is it really cool to like girly hearts and words like LOVE!? I love reading books that relate to my kids and that they can connect with. For me, boys seem to be the focus that I'm trying to connect with, that's why I like this book! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you already own this book, or plan on trying to read it this Valentine's Day season, download my freebie below for a few graphic organizers to go along with it, plus a written response page. Just click the picture below to download it from TPT! </div>

<br />
This quick project was inspired by this fun picture my daughter brought home from preschool. Isn't it adorable? At first, I assumed it was her version of a snowman...see the hole punched eyes and buttons, carrot nose, and arm? She informed me this was a MELTED snowman. So adorable!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R1jsXJdKupE/Vo6KD7EspRI/AAAAAAAADcA/vy8amWD1VpY/s1600/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R1jsXJdKupE/Vo6KD7EspRI/AAAAAAAADcA/vy8amWD1VpY/s400/Picture1.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I got to thinking, what could be done with 2nd graders (or just older than preschool kids!) So, I just whipped up this fun writing template for students to tell how their snowman melted. My idea is to encourage them to think of a unique way that it melted... maybe he went to get his hair done at the salon and the hair dryer melted him!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've added a small paper plate, turned over to the white side to make this a fun 3-D project. It kind of looks like a paper bowl, but it really is a plate. You could use a bowl too! Truly you could add the little construction paper pieces to the actual writing template without the paper plate if you wanted! Also, you could use crayons and markers instead of construction paper! I would just do it this way with the plates and construction paper to make it a little more engaging for my particular students! :) </div>

In case you didn't see it, I thought I'd share my fun post with you here too!<br />
<br />
First of all, I was trying to think of something that teachers REALLY need right now, at the beginning of January.... Most of us have just headed back to school after what I hope was a nice, relaxing winter break. (Never long enough, I'm sure!) One thing that I'm sure you need are some fast-paced lesson ideas to get your students engaged when they head back, groggy and tired.... but another thing you need is MORE TIME and more ENERGY!<br />
<br />
I thought and thought and decided that I'd share something a little different today! I'm going to share a quick and easy slow cooker meal for HOME! Don't you need more time at home and more energy too? We all know that helps teachers all around... one less thing to worry about, am I right?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-03Q9JsBrtug/VomNx-jHRiI/AAAAAAAADa8/0ixUOqUX7uI/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-03Q9JsBrtug/VomNx-jHRiI/AAAAAAAADa8/0ixUOqUX7uI/s640/Slide1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is a quick and easy CHICKEN TACO CHILI. Here's how I save myself some time, after a dinner that I've used the oven (or not), I leave the oven on, throw 2-3 FROZEN chicken breasts in to bake for about 45 minutes. Take them out, let them cool a little, and shred them in my stand up mixer. Then I put them in a sealed bowl in the fridge until the next morning.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
In the morning, I put everything together, as you'll see below! (You could put it all together the night before if you want and put the crock into the fridge until morning too!) Put everything together, then set on high for 6 hours or low for 8-10 hours. You can't really mess this up! Here's another way to save time: Don't print this or even write it all down. Take a screenshot with your phone of either the picture of ingredients (don't forget chicken since it's not in the pic!) or take a screenshot of the ingredients slide at the bottom. I take screenshots of recipes ALL THE TIME, then you have it with you at the store and when you are ready to make it! Save time, paper, and ENERGY!<br />

Hello! Today's blog post is a fun one!! Some of the bloggers from the CTR collaborative blog are taking a break from teaching and sharing their favorite holiday cookie recipes! Grab a cup of coffee, get cozy, and click through all of the linked up blogs that are involved! I promise that you'll find some goodies to make this holiday season! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm actually sharing my cookie recipe more for the "crafty" idea! I hope that's okay! I had this idea for awhile, displaying handwritten recipes in my kitchen, so when we moved into our new house this past May and I finally have my DREAM kitchen, I decided to get busy! The framed handwritten recipes that I have displayed come from my grandma and also my great-great-grandma. (As you will see, it says "Great" grandma on the recipe, but this was written by my grandma and found in her recipe box, so I'm guessing this comes from my great-great grandmother...if not a little further back!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I always collect frames that I like and reflect the style and decor that I'm "trying for" in my house. This gold frame actually had the perfect backing already in it when purchased, so I just slipped the recipe card inside! </div>

For the larger frame with three recipes, I took out the frame inserts and wrapped the cardboard backing of the frame with burlap ribbon. It was slightly difficult to slide back into the frame, but once it was in, it fits nicely and won't budge or slide. {Also displayed is my grandma's rolling pin.}</div>

As a teacher, I have a feeling that you have a large collection of books....and some of them are YOUR books...as in, kids can't touch them. GUILTY! I just want to know where they are when I need them! I may share them after I read them, but they have to go back on my special shelf in my classroom!</div>
<br />
Okay, well there are some children's books that I own that I haven't shared with my class...only because I think they are a little bit too much for them to understand, but I love them! (Probably more than my adult books!) Do you have any books like this? I am still deciding how I will present this one to my students!<br />
<br />
If you have followed my blog for a little while, you may have seen my post about meeting Patricia Polacco last fall! She doesn't live too far away from me and she had announced a book signing at a small hometown bookstore, so Abbie from Tales From the First Grade and I drove up (about an hour) to see her! It was so much fun! Here's the <a href="http://www.stuckeyinsecond.com/2015/01/meeting-two-fabulous-authors-patricia.html" target="_blank">post </a>and a picture!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gi3dO9BXeTQ/VmrqaiYFT2I/AAAAAAAADaM/TMxApWG7iZI/s1600/blogger-image--1727016741.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gi3dO9BXeTQ/VmrqaiYFT2I/AAAAAAAADaM/TMxApWG7iZI/s640/blogger-image--1727016741.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
She's just the sweetest lady and it was such a memorable day! Before she started her book signing, she spoke to the small crowd that was there and told a few stories about the books that she had in the works. First of all, she's an amazing story teller, as I'm sure you can imagine! Plus, the stories she was talking about publishing sounded AMAZING! Well, of course I also follow her Facebook page and the day that this book (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1481415840/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1481415840&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=FX4REBHMTDCJON32" target="_blank">Tucky Jo and Little Heart</a>) was announced that it was available for sale in August, I ordered it on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1481415840/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1481415840&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=FX4REBHMTDCJON32" target="_blank">Amazon </a>right away! </div>
<br />
Since I had heard her tell the story in person, I couldn't wait to see and read the book! It didn't disappoint! It's a heart-warming story about war, friendship, trust, and just a true miracle. One of the sweetest stories that I've read and it reminds me of how things always happen for a reason! Just when you think it's a sweet story, like all of Patricia Polacco's, it has an amazing twist, which seems almost too good to be true! Do yourself a favor and either purchase this book, or look it up at your local library, just for a heart warming read!<br />

<br />
I've been working on the rehabilitation of my leg and was just doing some stretching on my exercise bike, grabbed it, and read it again while I was riding...just a lovely story! It's okay for grownups to read children's books, right? Now I'm thinking of how I can share this with my class when I return and some of the lessons that we can learn from the heart-warming story! Since I had just read it again today, I decided I wanted to share it with all of you! What is your favorite Patricia Polacco book?<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9RzEIXkfvMs/Vmnibt_6GUI/AAAAAAAADYc/2KynumcjuLU/s1600/Picture17.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9RzEIXkfvMs/Vmnibt_6GUI/AAAAAAAADYc/2KynumcjuLU/s640/Picture17.png" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
I love making read alouds interactive. In fact, I love teaching literacy skills straight from read aloud books. It's a great way to not only get good stories into your classroom, but to teach skills that your students need at the same time. <br />
<br />
One of the most important things to do while reading a book aloud is to model THINKING WHILE READING. Your students need to HEAR what you are thinking in your head while you are reading, so they can understand what THEY are supposed to be doing when they read. They need to be interactive when reading on their own, too!<br />
<br />
The lesson that I'm posting today can be done easily with any book, but if you want to do this exact lesson, all you need is the book <u><a href="http://goo.gl/9Dix7D" target="_blank">How Santa Got His Job</a></u> by Stephen Krensky. (Plus chart paper, markers, and sticky notes if you choose!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TW3uWoZYL6U/VmnjLKJewUI/AAAAAAAADYs/uU9aMvAEJaQ/s1600/Picture14.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TW3uWoZYL6U/VmnjLKJewUI/AAAAAAAADYs/uU9aMvAEJaQ/s400/Picture14.png" width="297" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In my classroom, I usually get the anchor charts "prepped" beforehand with a title, but other than that, we do our anchor charts TOGETHER as a class. That's what makes it interactive. My students give me feedback on what we should add, what they want to add, etc. It's a SHARED anchor chart. I never pre-make a full anchor chart. I find that then it's just a poster for them to stare at. If they make the chart WITH ME, they have more ownership and understanding of the concepts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For this lesson, when students arrive in the morning, they will see this anchor chart and they are asked to grab a sticky note and record their answer/prediction on it and then stick it to the chart. This should be quick and easy, and it will get the students thinking and engaged right away, even if we aren't going to be reading the book until later in the day. In fact, they may not even realize that the question has anything to do with a book! This is PART of the "before reading" activity.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gBzoEp2rcF8/Vmnkd4BnEhI/AAAAAAAADY0/0Q28MBexbmE/s1600/Picture2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gBzoEp2rcF8/Vmnkd4BnEhI/AAAAAAAADY0/0Q28MBexbmE/s200/Picture2.png" width="200" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GCU8opdzEOE/VmnkfbuvoaI/AAAAAAAADY4/bsnDwZYszmU/s1600/Picture7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GCU8opdzEOE/VmnkfbuvoaI/AAAAAAAADY4/bsnDwZYszmU/s200/Picture7.png" width="199" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you aren't into using the sticky notes like I am (I do it all the time as a quick strategy!) You can also just ask students for their predictions when you start the lesson and record the answers for them on the chart. I have them all record their answers, stick them up, then once it's time for us to meet and start this actual read aloud, I start pulling them off, read them to the group, then record our ideas onto the chart. (Without repeating any!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xt6QsWm9LnM/VmnlR6jbOuI/AAAAAAAADZE/d1ox_Xkq4l8/s1600/Picture8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xt6QsWm9LnM/VmnlR6jbOuI/AAAAAAAADZE/d1ox_Xkq4l8/s320/Picture8.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aNokyQGMuq0/VmnlTEI5RrI/AAAAAAAADZI/kzPswDNJzPo/s1600/Picture10.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aNokyQGMuq0/VmnlTEI5RrI/AAAAAAAADZI/kzPswDNJzPo/s320/Picture10.png" width="252" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Show your students your "During Reading" anchor chart that you have prepared, so they know what to be listening for and looking for when you start reading the book. You may decide that you want them to look for other things, but here is what I put on my anchor chart. The "ways Santa got his job" could be changed to "Skills Santa has for the job." These are basically just a few big things that happen in the story that you want your students to be ACTIVELY listening for! <br />{To stay engaged and interactive!}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yy-LbooLuz4/Vmnl6zE9ExI/AAAAAAAADZU/mYjiWCjpB10/s1600/Picture12.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yy-LbooLuz4/Vmnl6zE9ExI/AAAAAAAADZU/mYjiWCjpB10/s320/Picture12.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, is the easy part...start reading the book! As you read, THINK ALOUD, stop and say things like, "Oh, here is a good skill that would help him be Santa, I'm going to add that to the anchor chart." and "Wow, I think that job will help him get the job as Santa, I'm going to add that to the chart." Also, "Oh no, that's a big problem and obstacle that got in Santa's way, let's record that to talk about later." Let the kids raise their hands and "think aloud" too. Sometimes, if you don't normally teach like this, it can be hard to get used to because the story will be interrupted many times! BUT, that's super important if you are really modeling how to "think while reading." The only way to truly model it is to do it OUT LOUD and unfortunately, that may interrupt your perfect story... in a GOOD way! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After finishing the story, we go over and discuss some of the things that we came up with DURING READING and decide if we need to add anything that was really important. Then we move onto the AFTER READING portion of the lesson.</div>
<br />
There are a few ways that you can do this. You can simply just have a discussion, you can pose and post the questions, then have the students choose one to answer on a sticky, or you can actually have them pull out a response type notebook to answer the questions. The "after reading" portion should connect the before and during reading portions of your lesson and shouldn't skipped! It's important to help with your students' comprehension! Although I just have my students respond on a sticky note or in a response notebook, I am including a freebie today with some of the response questions and a place to answer the questions. You can choose one of them or all of them, or you could have your students choose which one they'd like to answer!<br />

My favorite tradition to do in my classroom is Grinch Day. I have so much fun with it and I'm sad that I won't be in my classroom this year to continue this tradition. I'll be doing it next year for sure though! Here are some pictures from last year!</div>

Start the month of December with some fresh, new products and enjoy them at a great price during <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Stuckey-In-Second" target="_blank">TPT's CYBER SALE</a>!! Eeeeek! I can't think of anything much more exciting as a teacher! PROMO CODE: SMILE<br />
<br />
I love teaching in December, not only because it's short (ha!), but because I love doing fun holiday related activities. Yes, we are still allowed, so I do know that I'm lucky! {I have a super fun blog post that will go live on December 1st explaining what I usually do in December for Grinch Day!}<br />
<br />
I have to admit that I'm really <span style="font-size: large;">sad </span>to not be in the classroom this year for December. If you have been following me on Facebook, Instagram, or here, you probably saw a few of my posts about having an accident back at the end of September, and I'm <span style="font-size: large;">still </span>off work. I visited my surgeon last week and there is just still no end in sight for me. Six more weeks of no walking at this point. <br />
<br />
I noticed that here on my blog I had scheduled my GRINCH post to go live on December 1st (I scheduled it one year ago because after I did it last year, it was too late for people to USE it in 2014, so I wanted to make sure to post it again THIS December so people could see it and try it out!) Anyway, when I saw that was coming up and December 1st was so close, I got really sad that I won't be with my class this year to make sure it's a fun December for them. I've been reminded by some good friends that I can try to do some fun things with my kids at home and try to make up for it! I'm planning to find some fun crafts we can do in December here at home.<br />
<br />
Well, enough about that, let's get to the fun December products that I have in my store! The best news is that I have bundled my most popular December items together this year, which give you a big savings if you purchase as a bundle!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/December-Bundle-Math-and-Literacy-2203511" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="494" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBTYKsW0Usc/VlMrcpqL4_I/AAAAAAAADSM/SPL1m9mXsY8/s640/december%2Bbundle%2Bcover.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you purchased the 5 items included in the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/December-Bundle-Math-and-Literacy-2203511" target="_blank">bundle </a>separately, you'd spend $26.00, but I have this bundled for $20, saving you 23%. PLUS if you purchase it through the CYBER Monday sale, you will save even more! With my sale, plus the TPT code, you should be able to get <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/December-Bundle-Math-and-Literacy-2203511" target="_blank">this whole bundle </a>for: <span style="font-size: x-large;">$14.40!!! </span>PROMO CODE: SMILE</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Just in case you don't NEED all of these items, or you already have a few, click <span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Stuckey-In-Second/Category/Christmas-Winter" target="_blank">here </a></span>to see them each sold separately and ALSO on SALE! :) Don't forget the TPT code at checkout, I always forget!(Then I just get really mad at myself and you don't need that! LOL)<br />
<br />
<br />
I also have a brand new item for the month of December that goes with the book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0374355495/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0374355495&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=7TWFB7V67Y7UJEQR" target="_blank">The Not Very Merry Pout Pout Fish</a>. As soon as I saw it was out, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0374355495/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0374355495&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=7TWFB7V67Y7UJEQR" target="_blank">I ordered it</a>, and I loved it! <br /></div>
If this is your first TPT sale, you have been missing out! Now is definitely the time to stock up on the products that you were on the fence about buying. Not trying to do a sales pitch here, but I'm just sharing my experience, as a buyer too! I buy PLENTY for my own classroom and of course great clipart and items to create more products. It's my favorite time of year. Here's the way that it works, MOST stores will have a 20% off sale. So the prices you see listed in their stores for these two days (Nov 30-Dec 1) will be the price. THEN, when you are ready to checkout, put in the TPT PROMO CODE and you will save an additional 10%...which is off of the already marked down products, so overall that works out to a total of 28% off!<br />
<br />
Here's what I do... I start going through my "Wishlist" first because over the last few months, I have added items that I see and don't want to forget about to my wishlist. I check to see if those are on sale (which most likely they are because just about every seller will put their store 20% off!) and then I decide if I still really want them and they are worth the sale price. Then, I start thinking about what I need for the next few months in my own classroom and just fill up my wishlist more! I hope that you can find some goodies to get you through the next few months! HAPPY SHOPPING!!! {Don't forget to enter the promo code!!!} PROMO CODE: SMILE<br />

I've created a full five day lesson/unit to help students distinguish between facts and opinions and I'm super excited!<br />
<br />
It's a five day plan that starts by introducing the concepts of fact and opinion and ends the week with a short assessment of the skill. In the middle, there are 3 hands on lessons that are engaging and fun for the students! I'm sharing some pictures below, then linking up the actual product at the bottom, which includes all of the details for these lessons.<br />

BUT you wouldn't believe how many people don't know how important it is to leave FEEDBACK after you purchase items on TPT. Let me just give you some examples. I was looking over some of my statistics the other day and I have some of my more expensive bundles that I've sold 500+ of and only around 100 of the buyers have left feedback!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">You may ask, why do I care? You may say, we don't have time to leave feedback! You may say, yes I see those emails come from TPT over and over "reminding me" to leave feedback on my purchases, but I just Don't-Have-Time! You may say, when they remind me to leave feedback, I haven't even USED the product yet, and I'm not going to leave feedback on something I haven't used in my classroom yet. (Very valid answer, but don't forget to go back and leave feedback later!)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Once you realize what leaving feedback can DO FOR YOU, you will realize that you can't AFFORD to not have time! Every time you leave feedback, YOU GET CREDITS TO PURCHASE YOUR NEXT ITEMS! Stop right there! Go to TPT now! Start leaving feedback! This is SO HELPFUL on your future purchases! What teacher doesn't need a little "store-credit" to use!? </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Let me share some real info with you, I'm copying this directly from the TPT site. (Click on MY TPT, then click TPT Credit Balance and you'll see the details there too, plus you'll see if you have any existing credits.)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">From TPT:</span></span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.7811px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: medium;"><b>How it Works<br />Earn TpT Credits for purchases on TpT. You get one TpT Credit for every $ you spend on TpT. Thing is, you only get the Credits after you <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/My-Purchases" style="text-decoration: none;">Provide Feedback</a> -- both a fair rating and a fair comment -- on the items that you purchase. We will round up for you, too! If you provide fair feedback on a $4.75 item, you will earn 5 credits. Every 100 Credits is worth $5 that you can apply towards future TpT purchases, but there is no need to wait until you have 100 to redeem them. 50 credits is worth $2.50, for example.</b></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.7811px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: medium;"><b>The program is retroactive to feedback provided on purchases since August 1, 2011.</b></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.7811px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: medium;"><b>How to Redeem TpT Credits<br />You can keep track of how many credits you have accrued here or on the top of the site after login. When you check out, you will be given the option of applying your TpT Credits to your purchase, thereby discounting your purchase price accordingly.</b></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #515151; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.7811px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: normal;">So, for every DOLLAR you spend, you get a credit. This is why it shocks me that so many people have purchased $20 units from me, but they haven't left feedback! They have 20 credits just waiting for them! Please, take the time today and try completing this. Remember to leave thoughtful feedback about your purchases (That makes it helpful for other potential buyers! Think about what you'd like to know about a product when you go to read the feedback before purchasing.)<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /><span style="font-size: medium;">Easy steps:</span></span></span></div>

I wanted to share a post that I wrote over at <a href="http://www.classroomtestedresources.com/" target="_blank">Classroom Tested Resources</a>, a collaborative blog that I'm part of! I was featured just yesterday with this post! <br />
<br />
In case you haven't read it there yet, I wanted to share it here too! PLEASE be sure to head over to the CTR blog though to see tons of awesome ideas that a collaboration of teachers share DAILY! There are a variety of topics and grade levels covered...and some GREAT ideas!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CoWjNLtgwQM/Vi-h0S8LH-I/AAAAAAAADLM/lvfOB-26yCw/s1600/noun%2Bpost%2Bcover.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CoWjNLtgwQM/Vi-h0S8LH-I/AAAAAAAADLM/lvfOB-26yCw/s640/noun%2Bpost%2Bcover.png" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'm always looking for fun ways to teach (and review/practice!) nouns. I'm going to share how to use a simple read aloud and have your students help you find nouns in the story by recording them in their reading notebooks. Also, you could easily modify this by you (the teacher) creating an anchor chart as more of a shared lesson. It would depend on the age of the kids. My second graders can be kind of in between when it comes to the ability on this. Sometimes it's just easier for me to do a shared anchor chart together, rather than wait for each kid to "keep up" with us in their own notebooks. In doing this, I would have my own notebook under the document camera and I'd be working right along with the kids, so it would still be a "shared/guided" lesson.<br />
<br />
First of all, I love The Bear Books by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman. My girls at home love them and my students love them. They are adorable and fun stories! (They are pretty quick reads, too!) For this lesson, I used "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416958568/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1416958568&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=HVNLZM7SLTHER4BF" target="_blank">Bear Says Thanks</a>".<br />
<br />
I started by doing a quick mini-lesson with my students about what nouns are: person, place, or thing. However, I did add in ANIMALS to my list, too. This can be kind of a questionable subject I have found, some teachers think you should just put animals under THINGS, which I agree with since they are THINGS. However, for this particular story, it worked well for me to actually add the extra category of ANIMALS because this book is all <i>about </i>animals and there aren't any PEOPLE included in this story. So, in this case, I had to show them that you won't always find something for all of the noun categories in a story because sometimes people or animals aren't included. I did keep the PEOPLE category on the simple chart we made though. We have done other activities where they have practiced finding PEOPLE as nouns, so I felt comfortable doing it this way.<br />
<br />
Next, I started the read aloud and told students to listen for nouns that they hear in the story. But, I reminded them that we will read it a second time, so they won't if they don't remember all of them! (I just wanted them to enjoy the story first!)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ppq8AoFx8TY/Vi-jZ3FE2uI/AAAAAAAADLY/tsX_4MkjSfY/s1600/71Tw9gA%252BZtL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ppq8AoFx8TY/Vi-jZ3FE2uI/AAAAAAAADLY/tsX_4MkjSfY/s320/71Tw9gA%252BZtL.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UOTBgFRli6E/Vi-kZ4mPyxI/AAAAAAAADLk/_OEwmRqITmY/s1600/Noun%2Bpost%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UOTBgFRli6E/Vi-kZ4mPyxI/AAAAAAAADLk/_OEwmRqITmY/s320/Noun%2Bpost%2B1.png" width="243" /></a>Next, I asked students to just verbally name some animals, places, and things that they remembered from the story. We are sitting on my carpet (where we always do read alouds) and they raise their hands and share with the class some nouns that they can recall from the story. They could name quite a few!</div>
<br />
After that, we head back to our desks and take out our reading notebooks. In my own reading notebook, I model how to draw a quick, simple chart (nothing fancy!!) and they copy it into their notebooks too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, we opened up the book (under the document camera) and I started rereading the story while the students followed along, and we searched for nouns. We stopped on each page and started filling them into our chart together. They helped me and I helped them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RBEdTH29JLg/Vi-kp4WTTII/AAAAAAAADME/S8mSspwocHk/s1600/noun%2Bpost%2B5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RBEdTH29JLg/Vi-kp4WTTII/AAAAAAAADME/S8mSspwocHk/s320/noun%2Bpost%2B5.png" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">We all worked together and my students loved it! I found it to be a fun and easy way to "come up" with nouns instead of just trying to think of them on their own. Especially because authors of some of these awesome books use such GREAT vocabulary in their writing that students would most likely not think of on their own. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't think of them either!! <br /><br />Obviously, this idea could be used with ANY book that you choose at any time of the year! I also think this has helped my students with not only knowing what nouns are, but giving them some ideas for better vocabulary when it comes to their own writing! </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I've created a freebie to go along with this story as a special gift for reading my blog post today! You could easily put it into a workstation after teaching this lesson, just to reinforce the skill. Also, if you notice some students just not quite grasping the concept, this would be a fun and easy activity to do afterwards in a small reading group or one-on-one. </span></div>

<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>

I love changing the calendar, the literacy and math centers, and I usually change out table cloths that I have around the room with themes for each season/month. I love it! Something new for me and new for the kids! Well, with the new month approaching, I wanted to share all of the NOVEMBER goodies that I have and LOVE to use in my classroom! Plus, I'm putting my whole store on sale this weekend, so now is the perfect time to stock up and get ready for the new month!<br />
<br />
Here are a few pictures of how I change out my table clothes around my room. I don't put them on tables that kids actually have to work because I feel like that'd make life difficult. I put them on some tables that I have made into more of a "counter" to keep my small group materials, etc. on, then under the table I store things, so the table cloths cover up those items! Also, I put one over the table that I have my projector, doc camera, etc. on. I always purchase them after the holiday for the next year, super cheap and they have all lasted me years! I love them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FQjcfEBN_1w/VjOUKdyWOyI/AAAAAAAADQ4/2Jnd5RLuTZg/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FQjcfEBN_1w/VjOUKdyWOyI/AAAAAAAADQ4/2Jnd5RLuTZg/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PYzQBF-bgOw/VjOUKxY93LI/AAAAAAAADQ8/Zes2fBCSSuA/s1600/FullSizeRender%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="193" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PYzQBF-bgOw/VjOUKxY93LI/AAAAAAAADQ8/Zes2fBCSSuA/s200/FullSizeRender%255B1%255D.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dlEzwXmDrX0/VjOUK9LVxuI/AAAAAAAADRA/XOjNCd6Vbgg/s1600/FullSizeRender%255B2%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="194" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dlEzwXmDrX0/VjOUK9LVxuI/AAAAAAAADRA/XOjNCd6Vbgg/s200/FullSizeRender%255B2%255D.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's how I prepare my centers. I do this once, and they have last through two Novembers, hopefully they last through this year too. But if not, the time it takes to put them together and prepare them is worth it to last at least two years! It just depends on your class, I've found, and how they are with materials. Some classes are much better than others. Also, I find that if you have A LOT of centers/games to choose from, instead of just a few, the wear and tear isn't so bad because they "spread the wealth." {Haha}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I have a lot of people ask how I put my stuff together. After printing, the only thing I cut before laminating is the cover page, to put on the front of an envelope, and I don't even glue it on, I just stick it on the envelope, and slide them both in between the laminating sleeves. Also, another common question is about the metal prongs on the manila envelopes. Yes, I leave them on and sent it right through my personal laminator. Works fine! I've probably put hundreds of them through and no problem! Here are some pictures that show me preparing my Thanksgiving centers a few years ago! These are totally RAW pictures, taken at my kitchen table and in my classroom. Real life, nothing special! :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Slide envelopes into laminating sheet. (these are larger envelopes and I have to cut the top off, so they don't close, the pieces will later just slide in the top, no big deal!)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an example with the smaller envelope, you can see how I put it through. This cover I just left full size and lay the envelope on the back in the laminating sleeve. Again, I don't even take the time to glue it. The lamination will hold it all together. No wasted time! :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-auRLCXJIxFk/VjN-k2mjRzI/AAAAAAAADQY/S2B1Mdf8Wpg/s1600/IMG_6288.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-auRLCXJIxFk/VjN-k2mjRzI/AAAAAAAADQY/S2B1Mdf8Wpg/s320/IMG_6288.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When it comes to the game pieces/cards. I DO NOT cut those out BEFORE laminating. No way! No extra work for me! I laminate the WHOLE sheet, then cut afterwards. They all stay together just fine! I see a lot of teachers post pictures that have cut out each piece, then put in lamination, then they have to cut that all out again. NO WAY! Call me lazy...but I only cut once! I've never had a problem w/ the lamination using this Purple Cow laminator or the Scotch Brand one. (I like that one better!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a good shot of how I just slide the game pieces into the envelopes (I slice the envelope open with the end of scissors after laminating is done.) The envelopes don't close, but the pieces stay in! You just have to teach the kids to put them RIGHT SIDE UP in the bin/baskets when they put them away!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hello everyone! It's quite the week around here...full moon, parent teacher conferences, and of course HALLOWEEN! Although it's on a Saturday, I'm sure many of your schools are having parties earlier in the week. My school does not have school Friday due to parent teacher conferences late on Wednesday and Thursday, so the Halloween parade and celebrations are on Thursday, then teachers stay until 8pm for parent/teacher conferences! All of these Facebook posts that I have seen say they are glad Halloween is on a Saturday...I'm not sure that matters around here because now it's just a LONG and extended Halloween celebration, as I'm sure it is for many of you too! However, kids will have some time to rest over the weekend!! Whew!</div>
<br />
Well, my own interesting news is that I'm NOT actually AT SCHOOL through all of this. I'm currently off for an undetermined amount of time due to an unfortunate accident. I'm having a hard time being away (although I'm not sure I feel too bad about being gone during this crazy week! LOL!) I'm missing out on all of the fun!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you follow my on Facebook, you've probably already seen a few posts about my accident and staying home for awhile. Long story short, I was hit by a car on September 30th. (I can't believe it's already been a month, it will be 4 weeks on Wednesday!) I was leaving a meeting downtown in our city, crossing at the crosswalk with some other teachers from my district and I was struck by the car about halfway through the crosswalk. It was an extremely scary experience, but I'm SO LUCKY TO BE ALIVE! The bumper of the SUV hit my left leg right below my knee, sending me straight down to the pavement on my knees. SO THANKFUL that I didn't hit my head, go onto the hood of the car, etc. At first, I was in such shock that I was just SURE that I was fine, just a bruised leg...as I laid on the street corner, unable to walk. (I can laugh now!) I was taken to the ER by ambulance and we soon (well, not so soon...hours later) found out that I had a fracture on the plateau of my tibia. Sounds kinda fancy, huh? Well it is fancy alright, fancy as in it will require a very LENGTHY recovery time because of the location of the fracture. I had surgery to reconstruct everything and I am now the proud owner of two metal plates and four GIANT screws inside of my leg. (I got to see the x-ray of it this past week...OOOOO MMMM GGG!)</div>
<br />
I have to give a shout out to my school, my school district, my neighbors, friends, and family! I have had a constant flow of people here at the house, willing to help with anything we need. My husband has become Mr. Mom/Dad/Housekeeper/Cook/Chauffeur/EVERYTHING. I'm so fortunate to have him! He is seriously amazing! Mentally, I'm getting better and laughing more about it all, but physically, I'm still restricted to the couch all day, everyday. My favorite thing is when I get to move from the couch to bed for the night! (Sad, right!?) I start PT this week and hopefully I will beat the odds and be back on my feet in LESS than the 3 months that my ortho has restricted me too. We shall see!!! :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Although I know it could be worse, and I'm so thankful that it wasn't.... Please just never take things for granted... Life can be TOTALLY FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN in seconds...literally. </div>

I've been back in school for a week, but I know some of you are just getting into that mode. Actually, I'm still getting into the mode too! :) I'll give a short explanation, then just click on the picture to find it in my store. Some are freebies, others you may want to add to your wishlist! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A FREEBIE that I love. I had been creating this chart for quite a few years, but I finally put it into a digital format so others can use it too! Check it out! Essential for the beginning of the school year, so your students can get to know the difference between fiction and non-fiction right away. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fiction-and-Non-Fiction-Sorting-Activity-1677235" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BsO0EaRPmIo/VdC7fv_Z4QI/AAAAAAAADEw/58b-W6Am64E/s320/Fiction%2Band%2BNon%2BFiction%2BBook%2BSort.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another FREEBIE! I use these in workstations and to start small groups to get kids warmed up! This is a small FREE set, but I also have full sets of all 6 Fry's Phrase levels available in my store (later in this post!)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are my VERY POPULAR fluency phrase games. I have multiple sets of these. All of them have the same Fry's phrases, but in different format/clip art. My students like to see things changed up, even if it is just different clipart. This first one is a Super Reader (Superhero Alligator) themed set. I also have a "Back to School" themed set with school supplies as the clipart. There are 6 games that can be played as a workstation/center or in a small group. My favorite way to do this is to teach them in the small group and play on and off for a few weeks, then later put it out in an independent center/workstation for them to play on their own. I'm sure they might even have fun playing these games for indoor recess and would they even know they are practicing reading? Maybe, maybe not. :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This a Back-to-School set that I JUST finished putting together! It's geared more toward third graders, but if you feel like some of your 2nd graders need a challenge, check it out! I actually created a unit of centers to go along w/ the first unit of 3rd grade Treasures. These centers are the ones that I pulled out of that unit that I felt ANYONE could use! (Not just limited to the Treasures teachers!) I just HAD to do this because some of the centers turned out SOOOO cute that I didn't want to only limit it to the Treasures teachers! One of my favorite sets! There are SIXTEEN centers included here. You just print, laminate, cut out some pieces and GO! Hopefully they will last you a few years if your students are nice to them! :)</div>

This is my 2nd grade Back to School Mega Pack set. Similarly, I pulled these out of the 2nd grade Treasures sets. I didn't want those centers to just be limited to the Treasures teachers. So these centers can be used by anyone at the beginning of the year. Print, Laminate, Cut, Go! :) 30 centers are included! Huge set! </div>

I love using these math problem solving tasks for my 2nd graders. I have a set for every month of the school year. We do one each day to get warmed up and ready at the beginning of our math block. These could also be used for morning work or homework! I have created them three to a page so they are more printer friendly! If you like them, I have the whole year bundled in my store! Also, if you use Envisions Common Core, you will really like these because I pretty much followed the skills being taught in that series each month when I made these.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My mClass print and go packets are very popular! MCLASS is an assessment that we use here in the state of Indiana (and I'm sure others use it too!) But, these sheets can be used by anyone and I know a lot of people have commented that they have no idea what MCLASS is, but they love these! Ha! It's true, they are good practice for morning work, homework, and extra seat work. You can print them and copy them for your kids or you can put them in a sheet protector with a dry erase marker and have them used in a center. These are also available as a full year set if you fall in love with the September set! :) </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is another set of fluency phrases, but this time it's in a roll and read format, not the cards like the previous ones. I print these, put them in sheet protectors, then into a three-ring binder. I pull out a sheet per child for them to practice with during small groups to get warmed up. I also have a "Snow Princess" (Frozen!) version!</div>

I just finished this FREE bulletin board set and added it to my store! They are iPad templates that I added a picture of each child reading a book on, plus they wrote "I like reading because..." on the bottom of each iPad. Pretty quick and easy bulletin board for the beginning of the year! </div>

Last, but certainly not least, I also use WONDERS in my classroom and I have created resource sets to go with all of the 2nd and 3rd grade units. They are broken down by the week, but you can purchase a full unit at a time too. If you have looked in my store before, you will see that I have Unit 1, Week 1 available for both 2nd and 3rd grade for FREE! This is a huge value because even though it's a sample, it's a FULL sample of one week and you will quickly see how much is included in these full sets! Check it out if you use the Wonders reading series! You won't be sorry! I'm going to link the pictures below to the FREEBIES, but please note that you can click on "Wonders" over on the left hand side in my store and see ALL of my Wonders resources! They are very popular and as you can see by the reviews, they are used by many and LOVED by many. I love using them in my own classroom and after print and laminating them, this will be my third year using them in my room. They are still in good shape! </div>

I hope this blog post wasn't taken as me bombarding you with products to purchase from my store. I really just wanted to take some time to explain some of my favorites that I think are essential for back to school time. My 2nd grade classroom pretty much RUNS on many of the products mentioned here I authentically USE all of them in my room (even parts of the 3rd grade Wonders sets, I have printed and laminated them for extra stations and for my more advanced readers!) Again, not just trying to bombard you with BUY THIS BUY THIS BUY THIS. I have included many freebies that I hope you will find helpful as well. Good luck in your new school year and please continue to follow me here on my blog, Facebook, and my TPT store. I'm always creating things and throwing freebies up that I have created for my own room! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did a post earlier about my favorite back to school books, but I wanted to tell you more about <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1931636869/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1931636869&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=R2DPLEPG2AKJG6UF" target="_blank">A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue</a>! {Plus there are some other blogging buddies linking up to this that will tell you about their favorite back to school books too!}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1931636869/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1931636869&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=R2DPLEPG2AKJG6UF" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="357" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gWXEJ80fUZg/VAEmdlJ-82I/AAAAAAAABaw/7ZyziAKch-g/s400/tattle.png" width="400" /></a>I just discovered this book this past school year when I asked for recommendations on my Facebook page and a few teachers recommended it. I ordered it right away on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1931636869/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1931636869&linkCode=as2&tag=stucinseco-20&linkId=R2DPLEPG2AKJG6UF" target="_blank">Amazon</a> and ended up loving it! It's a book that you might want to revisit a few times through the school year, or just revisit the topic and remind the kids of "tattle tongues." They will remember what you are talking about! I even find myself saying it at home, then realizing that I haven't read it to my own kids yet! LOL</div>

The book goes over rules of when you should and should not tattle. For example, if someone is in danger, you should tell someone immediately. But, if someone is not in danger and what they are doing has nothing to do with you, you shouldn't tattle. It's fun to give the kids examples after reading the book and see if they can transfer what they learned in the book into "real life" (even though it's on paper!) Then as the year goes on, you will find out if they can transfer the rules to real life too. If they start to have trouble, read it again!! </div>

This year, I'd like to give my students this quick "check for understanding" after reading and discussing the book. If you'd like your own copy for free, click on the picture below. Don't forget to leave feedback and then click on the others in this linky below for more ideas for back to school books to read!</div>
